An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a simple, quick, and painless diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the heart. It is widely used to detect heart-related problems and monitor the heart’s condition in various situations.
Why is an ECG Done?
An ECG is recommended to:
- Check for irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)
- Diagnose heart attacks or detect past heart attacks
- Assess conditions like heart enlargement or poor blood supply
- Monitor the effect of heart medications
- Evaluate the heart’s health before surgeries or procedures

Every heartbeat is triggered by an electrical impulse generated from special cells in the heart. An ECG machine records these electrical signals through small electrode patches attached to the skin of your chest, arms, and legs.
